Performing a second congregation for the same salah

Question:

Assalam Alaikum

What is the ruling for second Jamma in Masjid? Some people consider praying in a corner of the Masjid acceptable? IS that true?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

الجواب حامدا ومصليا ومسلما

Answer:

It is makruh to pray a second jama'ah in a masjid which has a scheduled time for the five salah's  in which azan and iqamah are given, and there is an appointed imam. One important reason why is because it will cause the local Muslims to lose importance of performing salah with jama'ah on its scheduled time. The purpose of having one jama'ah is so that all of the local brothers come together and pray in a large congregation and be united. Allowing a second jama'ah in a masjid will take away both of these purposes.

At the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) there were no clocks to have a scheduled time for the daily prayers. In spite of having no means of telling time, there are only one or two incidents that are mentioned in Hadith in which a second jama'ah was performed, and even then it was the case of one person who repeated his salah behind as nafl behind someone offering fardh due to missing his salah. If having a second jama'ah was correct, multiple incidents would have been recorded from the Sahaba ( May Allah be pleased with them) because of having no means to set a schedule for the daily prayers. As opposed to some masajid that allow more than one jama'ah to be performed for the daily salah's, in which people attend the second and third jama'ah. This comes to show that having more than one jama'ah causes the community to lose the importance of having one jama'ah on its scheduled time. However Imam Abu Hanifa and many other scholars have given the opinion that it is not makruh if a second jama'ah of 3 or less people is performed. Imam Abu Yusuf (May Allah be pleased with him) is of the opinion to perform a second jama'ah without azan and iqamah in any area of the masjid besides the area were the imam leads the daily jama'ah is permissible. However the stronger opinion is that performing a second jama'ah in the masjid is makruh. If the second jama'ah is held in the same area were the imam leads then the salah will be makruh tahremi, it will be compulsory on every individual to perform there salat again within the time period for that salah. If the second jama'ah is performed in any other area of the masjid and he does not make it a habit then the salah will be regarded as makruh tanzihi. This opinion is supported by many ahadeeth. Abdul Rahman bin Abu bakr narrates from his father  " one day the Prophet (May Allah be pleased with him ) went out to help some of the Ansaar. When he returned, the jama'ah had already been performed in the masjid. So the Prophet ( peace and blessings be upon him) went home and prayed in jama'ah with his family ( mabsoot saraksi vol.1 pg.135). It is clear from this hadeeth that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not perform a second jama'ah in the masjid. It is best to have one jama'ah in the masjid so the importance of salah and unity within our community remains.
