What should one person say to another when he/she has helped them? Also, what should one say in response to JazakAllah?

As salaamu ’alaykum,

Is it correct that when someone helps you, you respond by saying JazakAllah for a male and Jazakillah for a female? Also, what should one say in response to JazakAllah? I have heard some people respond by saying wa iyyaki and I heard other reply by saying wa iyyakum. But I don’t know which response is correct. Could you please clarify this for me?

Wa ‘alaykum as salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh,

Yes, the correct method of responding is to say JazakAllahu Khayran to a male and Jazakillahu Khayran to a female.

Grammatically speaking, the response to a male is Wa iyyaka, and to a female is Wa iyyaki. However, Wa iyyakum serves as a universal response. There is a hadith in Saheeh Ibn Hibbaan in which a Sahaabi said Jazaakallahu Khayran to the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم. The Messenger replied by saying وَأَنْتُمْ فَجَزَاكُمُ اللَّهُ خَيْرًا. Therefore, either of the above variations is correct; but, it is better to reply with “Wa antum fa jazakumullahu khayran”.
