Is it halal to celebrate thanksgiving?

Question:

As salaamu ’alaykum,

Is it halal to celebrate thanksgiving?

Answer:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

الجواب حامدا ومصليا ومسلما

Wa ‘alaykum as salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh,

Although Thanksgiving may be observed as a non-religious holiday these days, it is still a means of resembling non-Muslims in their celebration of a national holiday. Therefore, one should refrain from taking any part in such a celebration. Allah سبحانه وتعالى has blessed us with a complete and perfect religion. There is no need for us to look elsewhere for moments of celebration. Furthermore, this is not to say that one should not show gratitude to Allah سبحانه وتعالى for the abundant bounties He has bestowed upon us, as being a grateful servant is the hallmark of a Muslim and is not limited to certain times of the year.

والله اعلم

And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala knows best.
