Is it permissible to use perfumes that contain alcohol?

Question:

As salaamu ’alaykum,

Someone I know is giving a gift of perfume/cologne to a fellow Muslim. The perfume/cologne has a lot of alcohol. I was told that since the alcohol is not being used to become intoxicated it is alright to wear this.

Can you please tell me if this is true?

Answer:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

الجواب حامدا ومصليا ومسلما

Wa ‘alaykum as salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh,

The use of alcohol in food, medicine and perfume nowadays has become so widespread that it is very hard to avoid using those things completely. Usually, alcohol in perfumes and colognes is made from other than grapes and dates. Therefore, one can use such perfumes and colognes though it is better to refrain from them where possible.

والله اعلم

And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala knows best.
