Would I be considered sinful for missing the fajr salaah in congregation at the mosque?

As salaamu ’alaykum,

I work a very long shift at work and get home late at night. As a result, when I get up for fajr salaah I feel very tired, sleepy and lazy, and I do not go to the mosque for prayer. I also don’t want my lack of sleep to affect my commitment and progress at work.

Would I be considered sinful for missing the fajr salaah in congregation at the mosque? Do I still get the reward for the salaah even though did not go the mosque, or would it be makruh?

الجواب حامدا ومصليا ومسلما

Wa ‘alaykum as salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh,

It is necessary for a healthy male living close to the masjid to attend the congregational salaah at the masjid unless he has a valid excuse to leave it. One who makes a habit of not praying the congregational salaah in the masjid will be sinful. Although the salaah he prays alone will count, he will be deprived of the reward of the congregational salaah and the reward of the masjid. The Prophet said in a hadeeth:

ومن استطاع منكم أن يشهد الصلاتين العشاء والصبح ولو حبواً فليفعل (مجمع الزوائد نقلا عن الطبراني)

Whosoever has the ability to come for Fajr and Isha salaah, even if it be by crawling, then he should do so.

In another hadeeth, the Prophet has said:

من صلى صلاة العشاء والصبح في جماعة فهو كقيام ليلة (رواه أحمد)

Praying Fajr and Ishaa salah in congregation is equal in virtue to standing the night in prayer

It is apparent from the above that it is imperative to attend the masjid for the congregational salaahs. Our duty to Allah comes before every other duty whether it is regarding our families or work. We should make our utmost effort to prioritize our daily lives in accordance to the pleasure of Allah. Attending the masajid is no less than any other duty to Allah. We pray to Allah that He puts barakah in your family and wealth through your ibaadah.

والله اعلم

And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala knows best.
