How quickly after Maghrib time starts must we pray Maghrib?

Question:

As salaamu ’alaykum,

How quickly after Maghrib time starts must we pray Maghrib?

Answer:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

الجواب حامدا ومصليا ومسلما

Wa ‘alaykum as salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh,

Rasulullah has stated in a hadith:

لا تزال أمتي بخير ما عجلوا المغرب واخروا العشاء

My Ummah will always remain well so long as they hasten in the Maghrib prayer and delay the Isha prayer.

The fuqaha (scholars of Islamic Jurisprudence) have concluded through this and other ahadith, that although the time for Salat ul-Maghrib is from the time of sunset until the white twilight in the sky remains, it best to pray this salah once the time has come in rather than delaying it without excuse. In hadith, we learn that Jibreel عليه السلام came in a period of two days to teach the beginning and ending times of the prayers. During both days he prayed Maghrib immediately after sunset. The fuqaha have indicated that the Maghrib prayer was not delayed past sunset because doing so without excuse is makrooh tanzeehi (disliked). Also if a person is to delay it without reason so much so that the stars can be seen clearly in the sky, this would be makrooh tahreemi (impermissible).

 والله اعلم

And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala knows best.
