Wearing a shawl in salah

Question:

Is it okay for a woman to put a shawl on her shoulder and pray?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

الجواب حامدا و مصليا و مسلما

Answer:

To put shawl on one’s shoulder while praying in a way that it hangs from both sides is makrooh. However, if it does not hang then it will be fine. It is mentioned in a hadith narrated in Sunan al-Tirmidhi and Sunan Abu Dawood:

نهی رسول الله صلی الله عليه و سلم عن السدل فی الصلاة.

The Prophet sallalahu alaihi wa sallam forbade us from doing sadal in salah.

Sadal means to hang something from the shoulders. The reason this is makrooh is because a shawl tends to hang down and force one to  it will take away one's concentration and devotion in the salah.

It should also be kept in mind that wearing a shawl should not lead to constantly arranging and straightening the shawl. That would be against the calmness required in salah. This is proven from a hadith narrated by Imam Muslim which states:اسکنو فی الصلاة

والله اعلم

Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala knows best.
