Making the intention to do qadha of ramadan and gain the virtue of shawwal

Question:

If a woman makes up her missed fasts of Ramadan during the month of Shawwal, will she receive the reward of nafl (voluntary) fasting (e.g. the six voluntary fasts) in the month of Shawwal? If yes, does she need to make intention for both?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

الجواب حامدا ومصليا ومسلما

Answer:

The six fasts of Shawwal are separate from the fasts of Ramadan. While observing one, she should not make intention for the other.

Rasulullah (may peace and salutations be upon him) said, "Whosoever fasts the month of Ramadan and thereafter fast for six extra days in the month of Shawwal, it is as if he has fasted the whole year." (Sahih Muslim 1164-204)

Imam Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) says, "The reason fasting for six days in the month of Shawwal entails reward for fasting the whole year is because the reward for each fast is given tenfold. The rule in Shari'a which we learn from the ahaadith is:

الحسنة بعشر أمثالها

The reward of a good deed is given tenfold."

Therefore, this reward will be gained after the Ramadan fasts are complete as well as the six fasts of Shawwal, which makes a total of 35 or 36 fasts.
