A husband and wife have lived separately for two years without divorce. The wife has now been informed that her husband has divorced her for the second time. May she observe her ‘iddah in her current separate home, leave for necessary reasons without her husband’s permission, and continue attending weekly Quran memorization classes at the local masjid, or must she remain at home?

Wife and husband residing in separate houses when divorce is given. Where does she do iddat?
A wife and husband have been living separately for two years without any divorce occurring. Two years later, the wife receives the news that her husband has divorced her. Would it be sinful if the wife is to spend her days of ‘iddah in the separate home she is living in? Considering this is the second divorce, would she require her husband’s permission to leave the house for some necessity? In addition to this, the wife attends weekly classes at a local masjid where she is memorizing the Quran, would it be permissible for her to continue attending these classes or is she required to stay at home during this period?
الجواب حامدا ومصليا ومسلما
In principle, a wife is to reside in that area which she considers to be her home at the time the divorce had occurred, even if the home she is currently residing in, is not owned by the husband. It will not be permissible for the wife to leave her home except for a necessity, whether the husband has granted permission or not.
As for the latter question, the memorization of the Quran is not deemed as a necessity that would permit her to leave her home during iddah. Therefore, the wife will be required to reside at home. However, she can continue her education through the use of virtual classes, or having an arrangement for a teacher at home.
